Lift modernisation at St Austell Community Hospital, Cornwall
St Austell is a coastal town in West Cornwall that is well known for its bay, which lies southeast of the town and stretches from Charlestown in the north to Black Head in the south. Charlestown is an 18th-century UNESCO World Heritage Site which includes a Grade II listed harbour that is frequently used as a backdrop and set for filming historic dramas.
St Austell’s Community Hospital is a 2-storey building that is situated on Porthpean Road in St Austell. The site is on two levels, requiring a one-stop passenger lift to the lower ground floor level. The hospital is managed by the Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and has 2 main wards and a range of clinics for people living in St Austell and the surrounding area.
Unfortunately, due to its age, the lift required modernisation work and the Trust’s lift consultants asked Jackson to tender for the modernisation.
In response to the tender request, Jackson Wimborne arranged for one of our Sales Engineers to undertake a lift survey. With this undertaken, we provided a tender which included a new lift controller, new lift car interior, new architraves, reskinning the lift doors, and installing a new door operator. We also needed to submit costs to re-belt the lift motor, install a new overspeed governor and load weighing device.
Following on from our tender submission, Jackson was pleased to hear that our proposals were accepted, and the next steps were to schedule the modernisation work to be undertaken at the earliest opportunity.
Local Jackson engineers operating from our Wimborne offices successfully undertook the modernisation work, taking great care to avoid disruption and noise that could disturb patients. Additionally, in all occupied buildings we always work to carefully barrier off our work areas for the safety of those who come into proximity of our work and for the safety of our engineers.
On completion of the modernisation work, we fully tested the lift and placed it back into service to serve both patients and hospital staff and are now maintaining it for the hospital.
