Multi Storey Car Park, Newton Abbot

With over 1.3m visitors each year, South Devon is one of the UK’s most popular holiday destinations. Local authorities must not only provide services to support these visitors but, importantly, also keep services operational for the resident population. These services include car parking in town and city centres, which are vital in helping to facilitate visits to the county’s markets and shopping areas in towns.

Newton Abbot is a typical example of one of South Devon’s 13 historic market towns that relies heavily on its local population (around 26,000) to support the various retailers present in the town’s shopping centre.

Adjacent to the shopping centre and bus station is a five-storey car park which is served by a single hydraulic scenic lift installed in a tower attached to the car park. Although the lift has had previous modernisation work undertaken, the landing and car doors had not been included in any of the earlier upgrade work and were beginning to show signs of potential problems.

To address the problems with the lift, Jackson responded to a tender request for the replacement of the lift’s doors, the car floor, and call buttons used by the public.

Shortly after submitting our tender, we received confirmation that we were successful and scheduled the modernisation work for January 2025, to avoid the pre or post-Christmas shopping activity in the town centre.

As scheduled, we undertook the modernisation work, which included new heavy-duty, stainless-steel landing doors and lift car doors, along with a new car floor, ceiling, lighting, indicators, and call buttons/pushes. Works began during the beginning of 2025 and returned the lift to service in mid-March 2025.
